Five truths to equip you to think with purpose:
You are what you think you are.
Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinks within himself, so he is. He says to you, “Eat and drink!” But his heart is not with you.
Takeaway: How do you view yourself? We must be careful because what we think stems from our heart. If the opinions of others, the labels of society, or life experiences have tainted your viewpoint of self, it’s time to reprogram it with God’s truths of who He says that you are.
Take every thought captive.
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying arguments and all arrogance raised against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
Takeaway: You have the power to take your thoughts captive. Speak God’s truth - this verse even - over every thought and use God’s word to fight against the enemy.
God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8-9 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.
Takeaway: Elevate the level of your perspective. When you stay focused on what you see in front of you, it is hard to think differently or believe that things can change.
Guard your heart.
Proverbs 4:23 Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.
Takeaway: Be careful what you take in and allow to take root in your heart. Everything that you say and do flows from your heart. If it seems hardened or you have a lot of walls up for protection, that is a key indicator that some heart work needs to be completed.
Choose your thoughts.
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Takeaway: You can choose what you think about and give your mental space to. You have to be intentional about it. Start each day with three things that you are grateful for. Write it on a post it note and stick it in a jar close by. That way throughout the day, you can be reminded by your jar of gratefulness. Continued gratitude will help you to think higher.
These five truths aren’t an overnight action that will automatically change the way that you think. It is a lifestyle change, not a seasonal change. If you are committed to doing the work, I am committed to helping you get there.
